Dave Dameshek On Demand - Fan Conduct Policy Overview

Updated: August 3, 2009, 8:54 PM ET

Now that football season's arrived, all seems right in the world again. But you may notice some troubling changes in atmosphere inside your once-fun-filled neighborhood NFL stadium. Maybe you missed news because you got swept up by the hit summer soap opera "Days of Favre's Life", but a while ago, Commissioner Goody-Goody-Dell unveiled his Fan Conduct Policy. Here are just of the things that will no longer be accepted in the stands:

  • Behavior that is unruly, disruptive, or illegal in nature
  • Intoxication or other signs of alcohol impairment that results in irresponsible behavior
  • Foul or abusive language or obscene gestures
  • Verbal harassment of opposing team fans
Or put more simply, don't do any of the stuff that makes going to a game fun.

Hard to take issue this effort to wring every last drop of pleasure out of the NFL, though. Goodell's Player Conduct Policy has been a raging success, right? Well, except for Steve Smith breaking his teammate Ken Hamlin's nose. And Chris Henry getting arrested for punching a college student. And Matt Jones getting arrested for cocaine possession. And... well, I'm getting off the subject.

Either way, it was one thing when Goody-Goody-Dell instituted his player conduct policy. After all, the players are employees and, as such, are subject to the rules and regulations set forth by those who write their checks. But he's crossed a line by trying to dictate the behavior of the fan. We aren't his employees. Matter of fact, since we're the ones who pay for the tickets, aren't we his bosses to some degree?

Thanks, Goodell, but we can handle it ourselves. Matter of fact, I recently asked for my listeners to help out with a righteous endeavor, and they answered the bell. I present to you a Fan Conduct Policy constructed not unlike our nation's constitution: for the fans, by the fans.
