  1. Don Bosco Prep (7-0)
  2. St. Peter's (6-1)
  3. Bergen Catholic (6-2)
  4. St. Anthony's (7-1)
  5. Monroe-Woodbury (9-0)
  6. Holy Trinity (8-0)
  7. St. Joe's By The Sea (6-1)
  8. St. Joe's Montvale (6-1)
  9. Fort Hamilton (9-0)
  10. Wayne Hills (6-1)
Just when you thought the playoff seeding for the CHSFL was set, Holy Cross, the fourth best team in the AAA division of the league, upset our 4th ranked team, St. Joe's By The Sea. Plus, St. Anthony's remains ahead of unbeaten Holy Trinity, which will be explained below. Wayne Hills dropped to number 10 despite another solid victory. But first...

If only St. Peter's Prep beat St. Joe's - Philadelphia in the opening game of the season. It would make this Friday's matchup at Don Bosco Prep even more of a showdown. Don Bosco did as expected, 51-7 over Passaic County Tech. Gary Nova with five touchdown passes, two of them to Ryan Cobb. Tony Jones rushed for two more. Then the starters took off their shoulder pads for the scoreless second half. (It was 51-0 DBP late in the first half.)

Now, can the vaunted Don Bosco defense, perhaps the best in the nation and one of the greatest in New Jersey history, stop the best player this year in New Jersey, Marauders running back Savon Huggins? (Live webcast here on 1050ESPN.com this Friday at 7pm from Ramsey.) The Ironmen stopped the two De La Salle running backs/national sprinters in the season opener; they contained Prattville's Sam Gibson, though the LSU bound quarterback had an excellent 3rd quarter; and they largely contained Bergen Catholic's running game, but QB Mike Halligan was elusive on many plays. Huggins is being recruited by Cal, Florida, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Penn State and Rutgers among others. He also ran for a school record 312 yards the previous week against St. Joe's Montvale. St. Peter's warmed up for Bosco with a 62 - 0 triumph over winless Dickinson.

The prediction here is Huggins will run for just under 100 yards against Bosco, with the Ironmen winning by three touchdowns.

Bergen Catholic with an expected 49 - 0 triumph over Paterson Eastside. Mike Halligan was 13 of 17 passing for 164 yards and two touchdowns. The Crusaders journey to St. Joe's Montvale, and while the Green Knights excellent skill players will put some points up on Bergen Catholic, the St. Joe's line is not as good as BC's. Expect the Crusaders to win by about three TD's.

Fourth ranked St. Anthony's remains ahead of number six and undefeated Holy Trinity simply bacause of a reason I brought up a couple weeks ago. The Friars beat the Titans last season, 62 - 13, and I'm not sure Holy Trinity can make up that much of a difference in one year. St. A defeated Xavarian, 42 - 20, while Trinity ran the regular season table with a 46 - 0 rout of Fordham Prep. The CHSFL quarterfinals begin next week, with both teams expected to advance. Holy Trinity hosts Chaminade (off year for the Flyers) while the Friars entertain Xavarian.

Monroe - Woodbury ran its section IX winning streak to 50 games with a 35 - 6 victory over Minisink Valley at Kingston. (It's silly to play at Kingston with New York State's first capitol farther from those two schools than they are from each other. Add additional transportation costs and the home school losing home game revenue, well, that's a topic covered last year and might be updated shortly.) Dan Scalo ran for three touchdowns and passed for another while Jared McFarlin intercepted two passes. The Crusaders should wrap up another section IX title next Saturday versus Warwick at Middletown. Then, it'll be a state quarterfinal against either North Rockland or New Rochelle.

St. Joe's - Sea was upset by Holy Cross, 50 - 38. The Vikings Lyle McCombs ran for 178 yards and four touchdowns, but Sea, leading 32 - 29 in the fourth quarter, elected to pass instead of run on a fourth and four from their 42.. Holy Cross' Shaquille Frederick intercepted and ran it back to the Viking's six. Holy Cross can make a case for top 10 inclusion since they beat both Sea and St. Anthony's. But they have two losses, one of them to Holy Trinity. Still, beware HC in the playoffs; they'll host Fordham Prep, while St. Joe's could have a trap game against Iona Prep. That game in Staten Island.

St. Joe's Kamal Hogan scored a touchdown on offense and defense as the Green Knights topped Teaneck, 57 - 21. St. Joe's lead at the half, 50 - 13. But St. Joe's will likely absorb its second loss of the season this weekend against Bergen Catholic.

I'm becoming more impressed by Fort Hamilton, which embarrassed a fine New Utrecht squad, 49 - 6. The Tigers' Brandon Reddish scored three touchdowns.Fort Hamilton has the top seed in the PSAL playoffs and faces Grand Street Campus this weekend. You get the distinct impression we'll be calling a Fort Hamilton triumph in the PSAL championship game, November 28th here on 1050ESPN.com.

Fort Hamilton's elevation to 9th in the Metro Top 10 means Wayne Hills drops to 10th, even though the Patriots had another solid game, 37 - 0 over Fairlawn. Fullback Trevor Jacobs had 170 yards rushing with a TD on 18 carries. QB Mike Quinn was 9 of 13 passing for 128 yards, one TD passing and another rushing. Wayne Hills will probably win its 6th consecutive group state title, but this season will, unfortunately for them, be remembered for the loss to St. Joe's at home, despite outplaying St. Joe's for a majority of the game.
