WHAT A TRIP TO CINCINNATI

The sub headline above the main headline in Sunday's Cincinnati Enquirer stated in bold letters, "Elder shuts out Lasalle." You won't see "Don Bosco Prep loses to St. Xavier" in bold on top of the front page of the New York Times or Star Ledger. Which shows you how important high school football is in mid-America.

The hospitality was superb at the 110 acre St. Xavier campus; the press box was run similar to that of an NFL team, what with real time stats displayed on screens throughout the box. On the field, St. Xavier's best players made the difference in the 17 - 10 triumph atop Bosco. It was clear that Bosco needed a quarter or half to "get the rust out." Still, DBP twice had the ball within the St. Xavier ten yard line, the second time during the last minute of the game. The Ironmen settled for a field goal the first time, but couldn't score at all in that last minute. While a New Jersey championship is certainly possible, the dream of a national title is gone.

It might be one of the ten best sports movies of all time, and the first scene in "Friday Night Lights" was riveting in how it properly set the scene for what football in a small Texas city means to the community. The video was a moving aerial of the brown, dusty west Texas plains. The accompanying audio was a sports talk show on an Odessa radio station, with the callers and host critiquing the performance of the beloved Permian High School Panthers. Most were not kind, some of them calling for the firing of Head Coach Gary Gaines.

During the movie, after Permian High lost a game to a bitter rival, when the Gaines family returned to their Odessa home, about two dozen signs were rammed into their front lawn, all with some derivative of "for sale."
